This year, the ICGEB Special Programme with South African Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs), in partnership with the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) has awarded seven research grants.
The Programme, now within its second year, focuses on the need to support capacity development and build synergies with HDIs. Through the additional provision of research grants focusing on cooperation on common areas of joint scientific interest and expertise, the goal remains to promote collaboration, train young scientists as well as the development of research facilities at the HDIs.
The awarded grants, distributed across five HDIs are spread amongst the research areas of human health, agriculture and biofuels.
Awarded HDIs include: Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, University of Venda, Mangosuthu University of Technology, University of the Western Cape, and Durban University of Technology Collaborations have been established with all three ICGEB Components: Cape Town, Trieste, and New Delhi, with collaborative research well underway.
2023 HDI CRPs are now in the final stages of their 2-year Projects, with grantholders being present at this week’s ICGEB CRP Awardees Meeting in Cape Town.
