Four years down the line, the ICGEB China Regional Research Centre is welcoming more international recruits.

The ICGEB Regional Research Centre in China Medical City, Taizhou, China, has made significant progress toward becoming an international cooperation hub.

Operational for 4 years, the current team comprises close to 50 people, including 33 full-time researchers. International recruits are increasing as are young researchers who can now visit China through international fellowship programmes.

At present, international researchers constitute one-third of the research team; two of the Principal Investigators are internationals, from Malaysia and the USA. Two scholars, Dr. Yomiyu Mitiku Wakjira from Ethiopia and Dr. Daylen Aguilar Noriega from Cuba, joined through the ICGEB SMART Fellowship programme. Additionally, three young talented scientists – Dr. Kavindu Dinush Munugoda from Sri Lanka, Dr. Ahmad Raza from Pakistan and Dr. Damilola Alex Omoboyowa from Nigeria, have joined the team as visiting scholars.

Prof. Nathan Yang, Director of the RRC states:

Our aim is to further expand our international strategic framework. The main priorities include intensifying efforts to attract top talents from around the world, participating actively in international cooperation projects, and engaging in more academic exchange activities. We will enhance our influence within the global scientific research community and ensure that our research outcomes benefit more regions worldwide.

Dr. Abhipsa Sahu, an Indian national, has been working in the centre for more than 3 years and the latest addition of Dr. Boon Siaw Shi, a Malaysian national, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, have also further enriched our academic resources and diversified our research perspectives.

In corporate partnerships, Dr. Lei Li (Australian) and Dr. Honda (Japanese) from the Australian biotechnology company Vaxine, are currently working in the centre to bring forward a collaborative project.

A new colleague Ms Yixian Li joined a few month ago. She graduated from Macau University of Science and Technology, and received her Master’s degree from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, UK.

The RRC has also started running a Chinese class for the international team members, with lessons held twice a week, in the spirit of learning some basic language skills and to gain insight into Chinese culture.
