On 19 June 2025, Nutrición Sin Fronteras celebrated its 20th anniversary with an institutional event held at Casa África (Nelson Mandela Auditorium Hall, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), under the motto “Alliances to overcome malnutrition in Africa.” The event highlighted two decades of work in defense of the right to food and the importance of cooperation and joint efforts to generate sustainable impacts.
The event opened with a welcome address by Mr. José Segura, Director General of Casa África. This was followed by the institutional opening led by Dr. Lluís Serra Majem, President of Nutrición Sin Fronteras and Rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Mr. Carmelo Ramírez Marrero, Councillor for Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria; and Mr. Luís Padilla Macabeo, Director General for Relations with Africa of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Next, Dr. Lluís Serra Majem delivered the keynote lecture “20 Years Acting for the Right to Food,” in which he reviewed the main milestones of Nutrición Sin Fronteras over the past two decades, highlighting the organization’s commitment to health, nutrition and the fight against malnutrition, especially on the African continent.
This was followed by the roundtable discussion “Together We Generate Positive Impacts at the CREN of Basse,” which brought together experts from different fields and territories. Participants included Ms. Núria Camps Vidal, Director General of Nutrición Sin Fronteras; Mr. Dodou Sanyang, Head of the Regional Health Unit of the Ministry of Health of The Gambia; Dr. Gloria González Azpeitia, pediatrician at the Canary Islands Health Service and Professor of Pediatrics at the ULPGC; and Mr. Yusupha Jawo, representative in Basse of The Gambia’s National Nutrition Agency (nNaNA). The session was moderated by Mr. Francisco González, Director of Looking For Development. During the discussion, experiences and results were shared that demonstrated the positive impact of coordinated work at the CREN of Basse in the fight against child malnutrition—an initiative highly valued by local authorities.
The event concluded with the opening of the photographic exhibition “The CREN of Basse, a Dynamic Space to Overcome Malnutrition,” which brings the public closer to the reality and the work carried out at this center. The closing session included remarks by Ms. Miossoty de la Caridad Paradelo Martín, Director General for External Relations of the Government of the Canary Islands; Mr. José Francisco Montelongo Espinosa, Director General of the School of Social Services of the Canary Islands; and Mr. Juan Jesús Facundo Suárez, Member of the Executive Committee and President of the Social Welfare and Health Commission of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) and Mayor of Arucas. During these interventions, the long-standing commitment of Canary Islands institutions to a project such as the CREN of Basse was highlighted, as was the highly positive work that Nutrición Sin Fronteras continues to carry out in The Gambia.
This commemorative event served not only to celebrate 20 years of Nutrición Sin Fronteras’ trajectory, but also to reinforce the message that institutional, technical and community partnerships are essential to advance the guarantee of the right to food and the fight against malnutrition.
