2025 marked a pivotal year for ICGEB—one in which scientific excellence translated decisively into real-world impact for our Member States and their communities.
Among the most striking achievements was the success of the B-INOC project. What began as a strong research initiative supported through ICGEB’s funding programme has evolved into the foundation of an entirely new industry in Ethiopia, with the potential to expand far beyond its borders. The results are tangible: thousands of new jobs created, improved food security for hundreds of thousands of people, and revitalised rural communities, where new employment opportunities are reversing long-standing migration to cities. This is development driven by science—measurable, inclusive and sustainable.
An ICGEB delegation from the Technology Training, Cooperation and Innovation office was in Arba Minch from January 24–26, for productive discussions with Addisu Fekadu Andeta of Arba Minch University. Field and laboratory visits highlighted the strong progress of the BioBoost project under the B-INOC Africa initiative, showcasing results, impact, and innovation delivered through an exemplary partnership.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its generous support of the Biotechnet Programme, has recognised the transformative potential of this model. As a result, we are now witnessing its expansion across the Horn of Africa and into Kenya and Uganda, multiplying its benefits across the region.
In New Delhi, we were honoured to host the Minister of Science, Dr Jitendra Singh, during the Board of Governors meeting in May, and to inaugurate the new Biofoundry. This cutting-edge platform promises to dramatically accelerate the pathway from research to product development and commercialisation, benefitting not only India but all ICGEB Member States. Equally encouraging is the progress of new and improved crop varieties entering national field trials in India, strengthening food security at home and beyond.
Science is what makes ICGEB distinctive in the development landscape. Our scientific strength is evident in high-quality publications, competitive international research funding, and the training and mentorship of the next generation of scientists. Join us as we continue to take that science at ICGEB a step further –delivering direct and visible benefits to people’s lives.
