Researchers from the SABIEN group of the ITACA Institute participate in the ANESTECH project, an innovative initiative aimed at transforming pre-anesthetic assessment through the use of artificial intelligence and advanced cybersecurity.

The project is coordinated by ISECO Servicios Tecnológicos and involves S2 Grupo, the Valencia Institute of Biomechanics, the Research Foundation of the Hospital General Universitario de Valencia, and the Hospital General Universitario de Valencia itself.

The main objective is to develop a remote preoperative assessment system that enables patients to submit clinical information, images, and videos from their homes.

“The data collected will be analyzed using advanced artificial intelligence techniques to assess the airway and estimate anesthetic risk, incorporating cybersecurity protocols specifically designed for AI-based digital systems in clinical environments. This approach strengthens both clinical safety and the protection of sensitive patient information”, members of the project consortium explain.

ANESTECH Objectives

ANESTECH is funded by Instituto Valenciano de Competitividad e Innovación (IVACE+i) under the FEDER Comunitat Valenciana 2021–2027 programme (reference INNEST/2025/339). The project has an approximate budget of €1.19 million and will run from November 2025 to December 2027.

The initiative will improve the efficiency of anesthesiology services, reduce care workload and resource use, avoid unnecessary travel, and strengthen both clinical and digital safety.

“In addition, it aligns with the priorities of the Specialized Strategic Innovation Committee (CEIE) in Health, focused on personalizing healthcare and optimizing available resources”, highlights Carlos Fernández Llatas, a SABIEN researcher involved in the project.

Role of ITACA-SABIEN

The participation of the Universitat Politècnica de València, through the ITACA-SABIEN group, focuses on the conceptualization and development of anesthetic risk models based on process mining and advanced clinical data analysis.

“These models will make it possible to infer potential risk situations during the anesthetic process, facilitate automated patient stratification in the preoperative phase, and identify early cases of particular complexity«, explains Gema Ibáñez, researcher at ITACA.

Likewise, the developed models will contribute to knowledge generation and the conceptual validation of new diagnostic approaches derived from the analysis of current pre-anesthesia procedures.

“We are leaders in the field of process mining applied to the healthcare sector. We have participated in numerous research projects, taking on a key role in user experience validation and the experimental study of interaction with prototypes”, notes Vicente Traver, head of the SABIEN group and participant in the project.

He also highlights that the group has extensive experience in digital health research projects, playing a key role “in user experience validation and in the experimental study of interaction with technological prototypes,” states the UPV Professor.

With its participation in ANESTECH, ITACA-SABIEN strengthens its commitment to transferring knowledge and technology to a strategic sector such as healthcare, promoting the real-world applicability of advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence methodologies. This contribution consolidates the group as a national and international benchmark in digital health, data-driven clinical evaluation, and the secure transformation of healthcare processes.
