Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a complex neurological condition that evolves over time, affecting movement, cognition, and behaviour. As many of the HD-related changes are invisible – since they occur in the brain – understanding what the disease does neurologically is essential to provide effective, compassionate care.

From diagnosis to advanced stages, neurologists play a central role in guiding individuals and their families through complex decisions, providing tailored clinical management and essential emotional support.

With this in mind, the Neurology and Huntington’s Disease course was created to equip both formal and informal caregivers with the knowledge and practical tools needed to support individuals living with HD throughout the entire disease journey. Effective care relies on strong collaboration between healthcare professionals, families, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure a holistic, person-centred approach.

The course covers key aspects of HD care, including the role of neurologists in diagnosis, management, and long-term support; the progression of the disease across different stages; and how motor, cognitive, psychiatric, and behavioural symptoms evolve over time.

What will you learn about?

  • The role of neurologists in HD care in diagnosing, managing, and supporting individuals with HD;
  • The progression of HD across different stages, and how motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms evolve over time;
  • Practical strategies to manage symptoms, including motor changes, behavioural challenges, psychological effects and cognitive decline, with a focus on improving quality of life;
  • The challenges of each disease stage, including symptoms, uncertainty, and the importance of supportive strategies;
  • The role of families and caregivers in dealing with the disease and the physical, emotional, and logistical challenges that come from it, as well as ways to manage them;
  • Address end-of-life issues in HD, navigating ethical considerations and providing guidance on end-of-life care, including ethical decision-making, palliative care, advanced care planning and supporting families through complex transitions;
  • How to be an expert in HD Neurology, understanding the key features to become an expert in HD care;
  • Gain insights from personal testimonies of HD family members and healthcare professionals to better understand the human impact of HD and effective care strategies.
  •

By the end of the course, participants will have a clear understanding of the neurological aspects of HD and learn how to better respond to its evolving challenges with empathy, flexibility, and informed decision-making.
