#GeoSTERN: a resilient response to GNSS vulnerabilities from OHB Italia S.p.A. - OHB-Italia

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (#GNSS) are constellations of satellites that enable accurate positioning, speed and time on a global scale and today represent a critical strategic asset across multiple sectors. The main GNSS currently in operation include GPS (USA), Galileo (Europe), GLONASS (Russia), and BeiDou (China).

However, despite their high accuracy and global coverage, existing satellite navigation systems have demonstrated fragilities to phenomena such as #jamming (intentional or unintentional interference that disrupts signal reception) and #spoofing (the transmission of counterfeit signals that induce erroneous positioning).

In this context, GeoSTERN is under study within an initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the #NAVISP – Navigation Innovation Support Programme. The future system will be able to operate either in synergy with or as an alternative to conventional GNSS, while being robust against such interferences.

GeoSTERN will be able to provide a “Positioning, Navigation and Timing” (#PNT) capability for #mobileplatforms even with a relatively simple and cost-effective receiver, also in the absence of GNSS signals.

The range of #applications is broad, spanning maritime and logistics sectors, telecommunications, energy distribution and Oil & Gas, as well as road and rail traffic management and the synchronization of financial operations.

GeoSTERN thus represents not only an innovative technological solution and a viable alternative to existing systems, but also a concrete response to real market needs, using space-derived expertise to enable terrestrial applications.
