Former President of Botswana and respected advocate for democratic governance, responsible leadership, and sustainable development, Festus Mogae leaves behind a distinguished legacy of integrity, public service, and principled leadership in Africa and beyond.

In May 2026, Club de Madrid Members, Advisors, and the Secretariat deeply mourn the passing of Festus Gontebanye Mogae, distinguished statesman and valued Member of Club de Madrid.

President Mogae dedicated his life to democratic governance, responsible leadership, and public service. As President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, he helped strengthen the country’s democratic institutions, economic stability, and inclusive development, earning international respect for his integrity, wisdom, and commitment to good governance.

He was widely recognized for his courageous leadership in addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis in Botswana, promoting access to treatment and reducing stigma at a critical time. In 2008, he received the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in recognition of his contributions to governance and public service.

As an active Member of Club de Madrid, President Mogae contributed to global dialogue on democracy, sustainable development, climate action, and multilateral cooperation. He participated in numerous initiatives and international forums, including the Imperial Springs International Forum 2019, always advocating for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies.

President Mogae’s calm leadership, generosity, and dedication to dialogue left a lasting impact on colleagues and partners around the world. His legacy as a principled democrat and champion of Africa’s development will continue to inspire future generations.

Club de Madrid extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Botswana. He will be greatly missed.
