We are excited to launch this year’s Annual Conference logo. We wanted the design to have a strong typographic feel that reflects both the grassroots activism at the heart of our movement and the determination to take the fight for equality forward.
Because the conference is in Ireland this year, we also wanted the logo translatable into Irish.
Finessing the translation of “Resist and Rise” was a process we undertook with the support of our local host organisation, Outhouse. Short phrases in English can often become much longer when translated into Irish, and the first translation of “Resist and Rise” was “Seas an fód agus éirigh”, meaning “stand firm and rise”.
However, we needed the phrase to fit into three words to reflect the design of the logo. After further consultation with Irish speakers, we settled on “Seasamh is Éirigh”.
In Irish, “seasamh” can mean “standing”, “a stance”, “a position” or “a stand”, depending on the context. In the logo, it conveys a strong sense of taking a stand, standing firm and coming together around a shared position.
“Is” means “and”, while “éirigh” is the Irish verb “to rise”, which can also carry meanings such as getting up, rising to meet a challenge or emerging with renewed strength. Together, “Seasamh is Éirigh” captures the spirit of taking a stand and rising together, while reflecting the energy and purpose of “Resist and Rise”.
Thank you to our designer, Redman AKA for what we believe is an iconic design, and to Oisín O’Reilly at Outhouse for helping with the Irish translation.
We’re looking forward to a great conference in Dublin, from October 7 to 10, and hope to see you there!
