Trieste, Italy: 10-14 March 2025, a pan-ICGEB course on artificial intelligence in data science and bioinformatics, was held in Trieste, Italy.

With speakers including the Principal Investigators from the ICGEB in Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town, the workshop aimed to equip participants with practical skills for applying AI techniques in the biological field, including data analysis, pattern detection, and experimental design.

“AI revolutionises data science and biology by processing complex information, enabling pattern detection in large datasets, advancing genomic research, accelerating drug discovery, and driving efficiency in scientific experimentation, particularly in developing countries – such as most ICGEB Member States” – stated Dr. Silvano Piazza, scientific organiser of the course and Group Leader, Computational Biology Group, ICGEB Trieste.

The course covered topics such as AI models applied in structural biology and drug discovery, metagenomics, signal processing and image processing, and ethical considerations and
biases in AI.

A highly successful collaboration between the ICGEB Trieste Lab, IT and administrative offices, the course included sessions chaired by Group Leaders and Researchers from the New Delhi, Cape Town and Trieste Components. Given the high demand for similar courses, the course is set to become a regular recurrence, involving all three ICGEB Components.
