For over thirty years, Cigref has been supporting large companies and public organisations in the development of their digital roles.

Our IT Job Profiles Nomenclature serves as a reference tool: it does not set out what digital roles ‘should’ be, nor what they ‘will’ be in the future, but accurately describes what they are today within the Digital Departments of Cigref’s member organisations.

La Nomenclature est disponible en français (French version)

An Excel tool presenting the Nomenclature in a visual, matrix-based format

A new tool for human resources management (developing and nurturing internal talent, training, recruiting and onboarding new talent) is now available, featuring an Excel file that provides a matrix-based and visual approach to the Nomenclature, organised by both job roles and digital skills.

This file enables users to visualise the digital skills defined in the ‘ICT e-Skills Framework’ in relation to the job roles in the Cigref classification, and vice versa. Thus, the entire IT Job Profiles Nomenclature is summarised in a single tab within this file.

The updated reference classification

The 2025 Nomenclature offers 52 job profile descriptions. Each job profile provides a concise and practical overview of:

  • a job title and remit,
  • associated activities and tasks,
  • representative KPIs and deliverables,
  • a typical career path,
  • trends and factors driving change.

As with previous editions, this version incorporates the digital skills set out in the European standard NF EN 16234-1-FR (e-CF), to provide a harmonised and shared understanding of the skills required in digital professions.

Two new roles added in 2025

The Cigref working group has approved the addition of two new profiles that reflect current business practices and needs:

  • 3.6. DevOps: a key player in the software value chain, DevOps streamlines collaboration between development, operations and infrastructure, whilst integrating security and automating processes. Its role is to ensure the reliability, speed and quality of deployments.
  • 3.7. UX Designer: responsible for the user experience, they design intuitive, inclusive and accessible interfaces, incorporating best practices in eco-design and ergonomics from the outset. They are involved throughout the entire lifecycle of digital products and services.

Two roles removed as they have become marginal or cross-functional

The working group also decided to remove two job profiles, the scope of which no longer corresponded to the reality observed within organisations:

  • IT Marketing Manager: their responsibilities are now split across several departments (internal customer relations, service offering, communications, user satisfaction management) or handled directly by the CIOs.
  • Chief Digital Officer (CDO): closer to a cross-functional role than a distinct profession, their responsibilities for steering digital strategy are now divided amongst several business divisions, in collaboration with the IT department but also extending beyond its remit.

A dynamic snapshot of digital roles

By publishing this new edition, Cigref is continuing its mission: to provide organisations with a dynamic and shared snapshot of the roles carried out within Digital Departments. The Nomenclature is not set in stone: it adapts to technological, organisational and societal changes, and serves as a practical tool for HR directors, CIOs, managers and digital teams.

Our thanks go to Renaud BLECH, Chief Digital Officer & CIO at NAVAL GROUP, who led this project, as well as to everyone who took part in and contributed to the working group this year.

We would also like to extend our warmest thanks to all the speakers who enriched our working group’s discussions: Aurélie BAUER, Head of the Training Centre at ANSSI; Thierry VANHAVERBEKE, Director of Data & AI Transformation at Air France KLM; Geoffrey CHEVALIER, HR at EDF; Michel PEPINO, Chief Information Officer at VIRBAC; Élise CRISPIN, Manager of Engagement, Skills and HR Transformation at Crédit Agricole.
