Dr. Eduardo Scodeller, valued and esteemed former member of the Molecular Pathology laboratory at ICGEB has passed away.

He is fondly remembered as an excellent scientist and as an exceptionally kind and gentle person by those who had the pleasure to work with him at ICGEB. Dr. Scodeller was Staff Scientist in the Molecular Pathology Group between 1990 and 1994 and continued his occasional association with the ICGEB as a Consultant to the Biotechnology Development until 2012. Emanuele Buratti, Scientific Coordinator and the current head of the Molecular Pathology lab remembers “I am indebted to him for the many things he taught me, particularly on antigen presenting systems and vaccines.”

Of Argentinian origin, he was one of the founders of the “Centro de Virología Animal-CONICET”, Buenos Aires, in the 1970s. He passed away on 26 October 2024 in Mendoza, and is remembered by the Instituto de Medicina y Biología Experimental de Cuyo – MBECU (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas – Universidad Nacional de Cuyo) Unidad Ejecutora, for his brilliant career, creativity and scientific excellence: “He graduated as a biochemist from the University of Buenos Aires, and his entry into the Institute was key to promoting basic and applied research in animal virology. He played a fundamental role in the training of new professionals, obtaining patents and publishing in prestigious international journals.

He also worked at MIT with David Baltimore, and at Queen’s University in Canada. In his later years, he was Head of the Virology Laboratory, now known as the Laboratory of Immunology and Vaccine Development.
