athenahealth, a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for health care practices and systems nationwide, today announced it is the first healthcare IT company to successfully migrate all eligible providers on the athenaOne network to the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). For over a decade, athenahealth has been a critical partner and leader in improving data exchange across healthcare systems. This milestone affirms athenahealth’s role as a driving force behind a modern, patient- and provider- centric health data ecosystem – one where actionable insights flow seamlessly, securely, and in real time.

“This achievement marks a significant step toward a unified, nationwide network that enables seamless, secure, and automatic access to complete medical records – including clinical notes, scanned images, and unstructured content – in formats aligned with national standards of clinical information,” said Sam Lambson, vice president of data and ecosystem platform at athenahealth. “We’re not at the finish line though, but rather a starting point for what’s next: a future where health information follows the patient, and insights replace fragmentation to drive better care.”

At the heart of athenahealth’s approach to interoperability is its deep collaboration with organizations across the healthcare ecosystem, including a longstanding partnership with CommonWell Health Alliance, and its focus on not just physician access but patient access to comprehensive health information. With this milestone, athenahealth supports Individual Access Services (IAS) capabilities that give patients expanded control over their health data. athenahealth’s no-login, digital identity-based access to clinical records empowers patients to retrieve their information instantly, mirroring the seamless, app-enabled experiences consumers expect in every other aspect of their lives.

athenahealth’s commitment to advancing interoperability also means evolving beyond data access to deliver meaningful insights at the point of care. The company has increasingly focused on how providers experience external data, ensuring they receive the right information, in the right place, at the right time to enable better clinical decisions at the point of care. The company has been rolling out ChartSync, a new experience within athenaOne, that allows providers to easily access and interact with data retrieved from TEFCA and other sources, reducing the administrative burden associated with chasing down records and eliminating gaps in clinical information.

“Our partnership with athenahealth is critical to the success of advancing interoperability efforts across the industry, as they prioritize collaboration over competition,” said Paul Wilder, executive director at CommonWell Health Alliance. “athenahealth’s TEFCA migration highlights their commitment to interoperability, and their empowering approach drives industry progress, connecting systems and equipping providers and patients with actionable insights that improve care and outcomes.”
