  • Including accessibility criteria in digital documentation is a necessary decision to advance in reducing inequalities, ensure the right to information, and support effective digital inclusion.

Bogotá, August 7, 2025. Digital inclusion has established itself as one of the fundamental pillars for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In its roadmap for digital cooperation, the United Nations states that achieving universal connectivity is key to ensuring equitable access to social, economic, and educational opportunities.

However, access to the Internet alone is not enough: it is also necessary to ensure that digital content and services are understandable, usable, and accessible to all people.

In this context, DocPath, a global company specializing in software solutions for document and information management, stresses that ensuring accessibility in digital documents is a concrete tool for advancing toward true digital inclusion.

“It is not just about technology, but about enabling the exercise of rights, facilitating access to essential services, and reducing structural gaps that affect millions of people. We must start with the basics: ensuring that everyone can read and understand the documents we deliver to them. Today, more than ever, accessibility is part of the minimum standard of modern and responsible document management. Ignoring it is not only an ethical omission but a risk to business sustainability,” stated Mauricio Saavedra , commercial director for Latin America at DocPath

Accessible documents integrate tools that facilitate their reading and comprehension, such as voice narrations or adapted versions of the content. This allows people with visual or hearing disabilities to interact with the information and store it without external assistance, guaranteeing the same level of quality in the experience for all users

A solution for real people, with diverse needs

Digital exclusion remains a significant barrier to inclusive development. According to the World Bank, in Latin America, about 85 million people are living with a disability, and one in three families has at least one member with a condition that may limit their interaction with conventional technologies. Added to this are other segments of the population facing similar difficulties: older adults, people with low digital literacy, or users with limited technological devices.

Document accessibility is not just a technical improvement: it has a real impact on people’s lives. For example, it allows an older person to apply for a loan online and understand the terms without external help; a person with a visual disability to review their insurance policy using a screen reader; or a worker with low digital literacy to understand their employment contract thanks to clear design and simple language.

From a business perspective, responding to this diversity is not just good practice: it is a way of embracing CSR with meaning and coherence, actively contributing to closing structural gaps.

Inclusive document management policies, in addition to their ethical and social value, represent a strategic opportunity with tangible benefits, such as:

  • Access to a potential market valued at more than 8 trillion dollars worldwide.
  • Mitigation of legal risks associated with non-compliance with accessibility regulations.
  • Strengthening of corporate reputation in ESG (environmental, social, and governance) criteria.
  • Competitive advantage over companies that have not yet adapted their documentary processes.

“When a document is not designed for everyone, it can become a barrier. That is why, at DocPath, we work so that every file—a policy, a contract, a certificate—is understandable, useful, and accessible to any citizen,” concludes Mauricio Saavedra, commercial director for Latin America at DocPath.
