George Vernon Stokes was a highly skilled artist proficient in oil painting, watercolour, and pastel, as well as a talented draughtsman and color printmaker. He was particularly renowned for his remarkable depictions of animals, showcasing a keen ability to capture their essence and character.

Born in London in 1873, Stokes received a private education that likely fostered his early artistic talents. His dedication to his craft led to numerous exhibitions of his work at prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy starting from 1907. He also displayed his art at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor, the Fine Arts Society, and various provincial galleries, earning acclaim and recognition for his contributions to the art world.

In addition to his exhibitions, Stokes made significant contributions to illustrated literature, notably focusing on natural history and dogs. Collaborating with his sister, Cynthia Harnet, he co-authored several notable works, including ‘In Praise of Dogs’ (published in Country Life in 1936) and ‘Getting to Know Dogs’ (published by Collins in 1947), demonstrating his passion for both art and the subject matter he depicted.

Throughout his life, Stokes resided in different locations, including near Carlisle and later near Deal, Kent. His artistic legacy continues to be celebrated for its beauty, technical skill, and enduring appeal to admirers of art and animal subjects alike.
