On February 9, in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11F), United Circles visited Ángel León School in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid. The session was facilitated by our colleague Cintia Escandell from COMET, yet another woman in science from the United Circles project. We were especially proud to highlight women in our project.

The day became a shared learning experience in which curiosity, equality, and scientific talent naturally took centre stage. From the very beginning, the students’ enthusiasm set the tone for a dynamic and meaningful exchange.

Throughout the morning, we visited the three third-grade classrooms, each transformed into collaborative “circles.” In these spaces, students explored the concept of the circular economy and reflected on how they can contribute to it at a local level. Through guided discussions and practical examples, they discovered that sustainability is not an abstract idea but something they can apply in their daily lives, from reducing waste to reusing materials creatively.

Students worked in teams, sharing ideas and building knowledge together. The focus was placed not only on understanding scientific and environmental concepts, but also on strengthening teamwork and creativity. They learned that research and innovation often involve unexpected turns, and that even when outcomes differ from initial expectations, every step offers valuable lessons.

It was especially inspiring to hear the students themselves express, through thoughtful questions and clear reflections, that talent has no gender. In their own words, they affirmed that anyone could achieve their goals with effort and perseverance.

One of the highlights of the workshop was a hands-on activity in which students created and played their own fortune-telling game. This interactive approach made learning accessible and engaging, allowing them to share the experience with their families afterwards.

The United Circles Project continues to promote inclusive education and intercultural collaboration. The February 11 activity in Madrid reflected these values, reminding us that empowering young minds today helps build a more equitable tomorrow for everyone.
