American Eagle Foundation (AEF) proudly announces their 30th year of bald eagle educational free flights across America.

During the opening ceremony of the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta, GA, Challenger soared into history as the first bald eagle trained to free fly across a stadium. This breathtaking moment of unity, perseverance, and hope launched a national legacy—one that would carry the American bald eagle to NFL fields, national events, and educational programs across the country.

For three decades, American Eagle Foundation bald eagle free flights have symbolized innovation and resilience, mirroring the grit of the American spirit. These flights are marked in the history books as some of the most recognizable live eagle presentations in the United States, captivating audiences while raising awareness about the remarkable recovery of the bald eagle.

“Thirty years ago, Challenger showed the world what was possible when a symbol of freedom takes flight,” said Jessica A. Hall, CEO of American Eagle Foundation. “At a time when the bald eagle was still at risk, Challenger soared into the forefront of the American imagination with courage, determination and strength.”

Challenger’s legacy continues through the American Eagle Foundation’s other eagle ambassadors like Lincoln, who now carry forward the tradition of free flight demonstrations and conservation education nationwide. These presentations not only celebrate America’s national bird but also highlight the importance of protecting our native wildlife.

To commemorate Challenger’s historic achievement, American Eagle Foundation will celebrate throughout 2026 with special events, educational programming, and storytelling that honors the eagle who started it all.

You can see Challenger the eagle during America’s 250th semi-quincentennial in the Wings of America bird show at Dollywood Parks & Resorts.
