Pieter Pander (Drachten, The Netherlands, 1962) is a contemporary figurative painter who dedicates a significant part of his research to animal portraiture. In his paintings the subject is presented with naturalness, often isolated within the pictorial space, in an essential composition that emphasizes its presence.

The artist is interested in the more fragile and immediate dimension of life. His subjects are observed with attention and rendered on canvas without idealization, in simple and direct poses. This approach allows the viewer to encounter a gaze that appears authentic and individual.

Pander works on rough linen canvases that often remain partially visible, creating a neutral and tactile ground. The background is prepared with acrylic applied using a wet sponge, while in more recent works the artist experiments with irregular surfaces by drying the paint rapidly with heat. This process sometimes produces small cracks that become part of the final texture of the painting.

The painting process begins with a pencil drawing followed by a rapid application of colour. Pander prefers to work with fresh paint, often using a wet-on-wet technique, allowing certain parts of the image to remain open while others are defined with greater precision. The eyes frequently become the point of greatest visual intensity.

His palette is deliberately restrained, favouring sober tones—browns, greys, blues and whites—which help create a quiet and concentrated atmosphere. The contrast between more finished areas and loosely painted passages generates a visual tension that invites the viewer to observe the work both from a distance and up close.

In Pieter Pander’s painting, portraiture thus becomes a moment of attentive observation in which the presence of the subject emerges with immediacy and respect.
