WeWhale, a European leader in low-impact cetacean observation experiences, has officially been awarded the internationally recognised Friend of the Sea (FOS) certification for sustainable whale and dolphin watching. The achievement confirms that WeWhale meets some of the world’s strictest environmental and animal‑welfare standards, reinforcing its role as a frontrunner in responsible marine tourism.

Friend of the Sea, founded by environmentalist Paolo Bray, assesses operators against rigorous criteria that include reducing noise pollution, adhering to responsible approach guidelines, protecting ecosystems, and contributing to conservation initiatives. To earn the certification, whale-watching vessels must maintain minimum distances, limit the number of boats around animals, and ensure that interactions do not cause any disturbance.

According to Friend of the Sea, WeWhale exceeded these requirements thanks to its commitment to innovation and sustainability—most notably through the exclusive use of electric and hybrid vessels. This choice ensures a near-silent, emissions-free presence at sea, allowing whales and dolphins to behave naturally without stress from engine noise or exhaust.

We are delighted to welcome WeWhale into our global network of certified operators,” said Paolo Bray, Founder and Director of Friend of the Sea. “Their dedication to electric technology and high-level educational content sets an example for the entire industry. WeWhale demonstrates that wildlife observation should respect species’ biological needs while actively contributing to their protection.

Beyond its technical approach, WeWhale distinguishes itself through its strong educational mission. Each tour is guided by marine specialists who interpret animal behaviour, social dynamics and communication patterns. The company describes the experience as an “ocean classroom”, designed to turn guests into informed advocates for marine conservation rather than mere spectators.

WeWhale’s social commitment also contributed to the certification. The organisation supports local communities by serving regional food and beverages on board and by reinvesting a portion of each booking fee in the WeWhale Association, which funds conservation projects and research on endangered species.

One of the association’s most prominent initiatives is “Save the Iberian Orca”, dedicated to studying and safeguarding the critically endangered population of Iberian orcas, now estimated at fewer than 35 individuals. The programme recently garnered international attention after being nominated for the Ocean Tribute Award 2026 by the German Ocean Foundation and Boot Düsseldorf.

This certification reflects our core values and reinforces our long‑term commitment to protecting marine life. It provides conscious travellers with the assurance that our work follows rigorous international standards—while every tour we offer deepens understanding of the ocean, not just creates memorable moments.” said Janek Andre, Founder of WeWhale.

WeWhale currently operates in Denia, Sotogrande, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, offering private and shared tours at sunrise and sunset. Looking ahead, the organisation plans to expand to new ports and launch immersive full-day and overnight expeditions, all while maintaining the gold-standard requirements of the Friend of the Sea certification.
