Striking workers, labour leaders, and community allies to rally outside Province House this morning

Striking long term care workers, community allies and labour leaders, including Canadian Union of Public Employees’ (CUPE) National Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick, will be rallying outside Province House this morning to demand the government return to the bargaining table.

Following an impasse in negotiations on March 24, 30 CUPE locals representing long term care workers have taken job action, with picket lines all across Nova Scotia.

"The government is still offering a deal we turned down months ago,” said Christa Sweeney, CUPE Long Term and Community Care Committee Chair. “Thousands of workers voted for job action instead of taking that deal, and after two weeks on the picket line, they still want us to take the same offer that led to this strike. At this point, it’s just disappointing that they won't return to the table in good faith and resume negotiations.”

There are 3,000 workers on strike demanding the government return to the table and negotiate a decent deal that addresses understaffing and improves wages. The majority of workers in this sector are earning well below the living wage for Nova Scotia.
