The April 2026 edition of the ICGEB-DCVMN Technology Transfer for Vaccine Manufacturing course has been concluded, further reinforcing global efforts to strengthen vaccine manufacturing capacity in low- and middle-income countries.
Jointly organised by the ICGEB and the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN), the course was delivered through a hybrid format combining a 5-week online phase with an intensive on-site practical module at ICGEB’s Biotechnology Development Unit (BDU) in Trieste. The training brought together 10 professionals working in technology transfer, quality, and biomanufacturing from Bangladesh, China, India, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. The programme ran from 2 March to 17 April 2026, building on a well-established series of Technology Transfer courses developed by ICGEB and DCVMN to support sustainable and locally driven vaccine production worldwide.
Dr. Natasa Skoko, Biotech Development Group Leader at ICGEB states: “Combining theoretical insight with practical experience, the programme supports the development of resilient, self-sustaining biomanufacturing capacity across ICGEB Member States.”
Covering core aspects of technology transfer, including intellectual property and licensing, GMP and regulatory frameworks, vaccine bioprocess platforms, documentation, and risk management, the online module was followed by in-person interactive lectures, case studies, and group discussions, which enabled participants to explore challenges commonly encountered during technology transfer projects and consider appropriate mitigation strategies.
Participant feedback highlighted the effectiveness of this integrated approach. The online component was perceived as informative and engaging, with training materials proving valuable for managing technology transfer projects. Many participants emphasised the importance of the practical sessions, identifying hands-on exercises and real-case scenarios as the most impactful elements of the course, including the opportunities for peer exchange.
The collaboration between ICGEB and DCVMN aims to expand access to high-quality training in technology transfer for vaccine and biotherapeutics manufacturing. ICGEB delivers training that addresses the full technology transfer lifecycle, from early planning and risk evaluation through to validation and implementation.
