Hospital-based wound center hyperbaric technician helps patient into a monoplace chamber to receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment.
Launched in 2021 by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, the primary source of scientific information for hyperbaric medicine physiology worldwide, and Hyperbaric Awareness USA™, Hyperbaric Awareness Month aims to elevate awareness of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy across the United States. The month now joins together many hyperbaric medicine societies and stakeholders to celebrate the advancements in the field.
HBO2 therapy is a medical treatment prescribed by a provider to enhance the body’s ability to heal. During HBO2 therapy, patients breathe 100% pure oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The pressure inside this chamber is about two and a half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere.
This high-pressure environment allows the blood to carry more oxygen to all parts of the body to repair injured tissue. HBO2 therapy also helps to fight certain infections, such as those that occur in the bone.
“While hyperbaric medicine is considered an ‘advanced modality’ by those in the field, it is actually not a new treatment. HBO2 therapy has been utilized for over one hundred years with early use by the Navy to treat decompression sickness in divers,” explained Dan Christopher, Vice President, HBO2 Training & Education and Corporate Safety Director of RestorixHealth. “HBO2 therapy is not new; it’s a safe, proven therapy.”
Among RestorixHealth’s nearly 300 partners across 41 states, over half offer HBO2 therapy within their managed centers. These centers range from operating several monoplace hyperbaric chambers, a clear chamber that holds one patient at a time, to large multiplace hyperbaric chambers, in which one chamber can hold multiple patients at once.
“Patients at our comprehensive wound and hyperbaric medicine centers undergo extensive evaluation and assessment processes to ensure HBO2 therapy is an appropriate treatment,” added Christopher. “RestorixHealth is deeply committed to creating and maintaining a safe environment for HBO2 patients, supervising physicians and the entire hyperbaric medicine team and utilizing it only for approved indications.”
“Part of RestorixHealth’s mission is to increase access to care for patients with non-healing wounds, both external and internal, and recognizing Hyperbaric Awareness Month amplifies that mission,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. William H. Tettelbach. “HBO2 therapy can be life-changing for appropriately selected patients. This month serves as an important reminder for providers, healthcare leaders and communities to learn more about the role HBO2 therapy can play in healing safely and providing access to advanced care.”
