EIT Urban Mobility is confirming its active participation in European Mobility Week 2024, the European Commission’s flagship campaign promoting sustainable urban mobility. Taking place from 16–22 September, this annual event culminates in the highly anticipated Car-Free Sunday, inviting cities across Europe to rethink their transportation systems and celebrate eco-friendly mobility alternatives such as walking and cycling.

EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a body of the EU, takes the week to highlight the work done by cities as they are at the forefront of the switch to sustainable mobility. With cities and regions from across Europe, including EIT Urban Mobility partners such as Ajka, Antalya, Barcelona, Helsinki, and Milan, participating in this week-long initiative, the campaign shines a light on the transformative potential of sustainable mobility solutions.

EIT Urban Mobility will be unveiling a new study on cost and benefit of the sustainable urban transition on the 1October, highlighting that shifting to public transport, shared mobility, and active modes of transport could generate cumulative health benefits of up to €1,170 per capita by 2050 due to more active lifestyles.

Julienne Chen, Head of City Partnerships added: “As we enter into the final stretch of 2024, we will also start to see the results from cities, regions and other public authorities that are engaging in EIT Urban Mobility’s different activities this year to co-create, test and evaluate new mobility solutions on the ground. From low emissions postal delivery to AI management of traffic intersections – we look forward to further sharing the work being done within our network to create more liveable cities for all.”

Highlighting cities in action

Throughout the week, cities across Europe will showcase a variety of innovative projects. These range from free public transport days in Vitoria Gasteiz and bike-sharing schemes in Lecce to the pedestrianization of streets in Istanbul and eco-driving initiatives in Loule. These efforts underline the EU’s collective momentum toward cleaner, greener cities.

In addition, numerous cities, including Strasbourg, Brussels, Lisbon, and Barcelona, will take part in Park(ing) Day. This annual event transforms parking spaces into temporary parks, raising awareness about the use of public space and promoting citizen-centric urban planning. EIT Urban Mobility proudly supports Park(ing) Day as it reflects our commitment to improving the quality of urban life by fostering sustainable and inclusive spaces.

Come and meet us in the streets of Barcelona as we partner up with 74 other entities!

EIT Urban Mobility will also host a Mobility Talks Webinar on 25 September. Titled “(Re)-Connecting Cities: Mobility, People, and Places”, the webinar will feature expert panellists discussing transition strategies for more liveable spaces. Topics include street design, access management, and the impact of reimagined public spaces on climate and mobility systems. This engaging discussion is open to all and will be a great way to gather insights from city planners, mobility professionals, and stakeholders across Europe.
