An International Scientific Conference is to be held from 11-13 November 2024, organised by Area Science Park in collaboration with the ICGEB.

Trieste, 30 October 2024 – Less than two weeks to go until the International Scientific Conference ‘Pandemic preparedness: Achievements, current challenges, and new frontiers’ scheduled from 11 to 13 November 2024 at the Savoia Excelsior Palace Hotel in Trieste, which will involve internationally renowned scientists with the aim of fostering knowledge sharing and multidisciplinary cooperation to prevent and address potential epidemic risks from known and emerging viruses.

ICGEB participates in numerous projects and activities in a continuous process of planning, exercising, revising and translating into action international pandemic preparedness and response plans.

The Conference, organised by Area Science Park in collaboration with the ICGEB, within the framework of the PRP@CERIC project, financed by PNRR funds, will be divided into 10 thematic sessions, in which 13 internationally renowned ‘invited speakers’ and 42 other speakers will discuss diagnostics, epidemiology, surveillance, drug discovery and preventive approaches, in a context of multidisciplinary international cooperation.

Among the prominent names expected, Emma Thomson (MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for virus research), will discuss next-generation genomic sequencing to detect new and emerging viruses; Yoshihiro Kawaoka (University of Tokyo – University of Wisconsin-Madison), will talk about the state of research on influenza and ebola; Johan Neyts (University of Leuven), will speak on the development of drugs against viral infections; Marion Koopmans (Erasmus University Medical Center) will address the issue of the emergence and spread of diseases by ‘species jump’ (spillover); Rino Rappuoli (Biotecnopolo Foundation of Siena), a pioneer in the development of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, will talk about the amplification of infections caused by climate change.
