In February 2025, ICGEB Director-General Dr. Lawrence Banks was in Rwanda to discuss involvement in ICGEB activities with the Minister of Education.
During a visit organised by the Rwanda Ministry of Education, Dr. Lawrence Banks met with Hon. Joseph Nsengimana, Minister for Education to discuss the country’s involvement with ICGEB since its entry as Member State in 2023. Future collaborations in the field of training in the life sciences were also on the agenda.
The ICGEB Appointed Governor for Rwanda, Eng. Michael Hughes and the ICGEB Liaison Officer for the country, Dr. Dieudonne Mutangana, instrumental in bringing Rwanda closer to membership in the previous years, also participated in the talks.
The mission represented an opportunity for Dr. Banks to hold an ICGEB Awareness Workshop for the scientific community at the University of Rwanda, providing information and advice on how to apply for ICGEB programmes (grants, fellowships, meetings and courses).
Dr. Banks also met with representatives of the University of Rwanda, the Rwanda Forensic Institute, the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority, the Africa Blockchain Institute, the Rwanda Biomedical Center, and GIZ Rwanda.
