CORRAL DE LA MORERÍA: 69 YEARS OF THE CATHEDRAL OF FLAMENCO

The most-watched flamenco show in history, with over 5 million spectators in nearly seven decades.

A one-of-a-kind venue where flamenco and fine dining meet at the highest level

Madrid, May 20 – Corral de la Morería, considered the best flamenco tablao in the world, celebrated its 69th anniversary today, May 20. Juanma, Armando, and Blanca del Rey attended the event, as well as acclaimed artists such as Manuel Liñán and Lucía La Piñona. During the celebration, the Del Rey family officially launched the calendar for the 70th anniversary year, culminating on May 20, 2026.

Over the next 12 months, a special program of events will unfold, beginning with a congress on May 28, 29, and 30 dedicated to the 70-year history of Corral de la Morería. This congress will be part of the inaugural Madrid Flamenco Biennial, led by Ángel Rojas, and held in three iconic venues: Corral de la Morería itself, the Ateneo de Madrid, and the City Hall Auditorium. The congress will be curated and coordinated by journalist Teo Sánchez, who will explore how Corral de la Morería has evolved from its status as a flamenco institution to a global cultural icon. Admission is free until capacity is reached, and the full program can be found at www.bienalflamencomadrid.com/congreso. The event will feature performances by María Moreno, Jesús Méndez, Joni Jiménez, Olga Pericet, Ana Morales, Antonio Najarro, and Jesús Fernández, along with participation from artists, historians, flamenco scholars, journalists, and intellectuals.

Among the year’s highlights, a documentary is currently being filmed in collaboration with Telemadrid, telling the story of Corral de la Morería, offering a personal glimpse into the Del Rey family and uncovering the secrets behind what makes this venue truly unique.

Additionally, starting in September, the hugely popular «Noches Brujas» (Witching Nights) series will make its much-anticipated return.

The Flamenco Stars Gala of Corral de la Morería, now a cornerstone of the Festival de la Hispanidad, will again fill Madrid’s Plaza Mayor with 20,000 spectators on October 12.

It is undeniable that Corral de la Morería has become a global icon, as confirmed by The New York Times, which ranks it first on its list of cultural and culinary must-sees in Madrid, alongside the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía, and the Royal Palace.

Brothers Juanma and Armando del Rey are the driving force behind this new era. Their vision of uniting top-tier art and gastronomy is brought to life by flamenco’s biggest stars and the high-end cuisine of chef David García, along with the world’s most extensive Sherry wine list. This deep-rooted, cutting-edge project has captivated audiences from Spain and around the globe, who flock to experience something many describe as almost spiritual.

Recognized as the Cathedral of Flamenco in Spain, Corral de la Morería is the only flamenco tablao in the world with a *Michelin-starred restaurant, as well as three Soles Repsol, placing it at the very top of Spanish gastronomy.

This success is backed by numerous accolades, including Best Restaurant of the Year in Madrid, Best Flamenco Tablao in the World, and Most Innovative Restaurant, among others.

Artistic Director and owner Blanca del Rey is regarded as one of the most important flamenco dancers and choreographers in history. She has received the National Flamenco Award, the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (awarded by the King and Queen of Spain), and the Medal of Madrid, presented by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida.

In Blanca’s own words: “We are immensely happy to celebrate this anniversary. Everything that is happening to us is truly amazing. I have devoted my entire life to flamenco, and to see how far Corral de la Morería has come is something very special. As someone told us recently, Corral de la Morería is part of the cultural heritage of Madrid, of Spain, and of the world.”

Juanma del Rey, owner and director of Corral de la Morería, is also a Spanish Wine Ambassador, an honor that joins his National Gastronomy Award for Best Front-of-House Management, awarded at the 43rd edition of Spain’s Royal Academy of Gastronomy awards.

“Our vision and project have been to create a new path that hadn’t been explored until now: combining art and gastronomy at the highest level. This has only been possible thanks to a team that has always believed in our idea and allowed us to make our dream a reality. Working alongside my brother Armando and my mother Blanca—who are the soul of this house—flamenco’s top stars, and chef David García, whose talent is beyond extraordinary, has been key.”, he said.

For David García, head chef at Corral de la Morería: “It’s fantastic to be part of a project that merges high-level flamenco with haute cuisine. It’s a unique and incomparable experience unlike anything in the world. It’s pure emotion.”

The Corral de la Morería stage hosts flamenco’s greatest living stars, including Jesús Carmona, Patricia Guerrero, Olga Pericet, Manuel Liñán, Ana Morales, and Eduardo Guerrero. Throughout history, it has seen performances from legends like Paco de Lucía (who debuted Entre Dos Aguas here), Camarón (who performed at age 13), Pastora Imperio, Antonio Gades, El Cigala, Mario Maya, Blanca del Rey, and many more.

Corral de la Morería is also a center for choreographic and musical creation, continuing to push flamenco’s boundaries with original productions—such as a recent one starring Eduardo Guerrero.

And on any given night, the neighboring table may host celebrities from the worlds of music and cinema, including Becky G, Tim Burton, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Aniston, The Rolling Stones, U2, and an endless list of stars.

About Corral de la Morería

Corral de la Morería was founded by Manuel del Rey—a passionate admirer of culture, the arts, and flamenco—on May 20, 1956, when he created the modern flamenco tablao format and named it Corral de la Morería.

He traveled throughout Spain recruiting the best artists, determined to present flamenco as a high art form. He succeeded in attracting Madrid audiences, who filled the venue night after night, making it a cultural cornerstone of the capital.

From Pastora Imperio to Blanca del Rey, the stage has launched the careers of greats such as Antonio Gades, La Chunga, Fosforito, María Albaicín, Isabel Pantoja, Los del Río, Lucero Tena, Serranito, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, Manuela Vargas, El Güito, Mario Maya, La Paquera de Jerez, Lola Greco, Javier Barón, Diego el Cigala, Arcángel, Antonio Canales, and many more.

In nearly seven decades, its stage has witnessed some of flamenco’s most historic moments: the debut of Entre Dos Aguas by Paco de Lucía, the professional launch of Isabel Pantoja, the legendary nights of Sabicas when he visited Spain, or the creation of Blanca del Rey’s iconic soleá del mantón.

A one-of-a-kind venue where flamenco and fine dining meet at the highest level, Corral de la Morería is the most important and artistically significant flamenco stage in history.
