The iconic transport operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has been recognized for its diversity training and its commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion.
July 22, 2025 – The Montjuïc Cable Car, operated by TMB, was awarded the Queer Destinations Committed seal this Monday by the international organization Queer Destinations, which works to promote inclusive and safe tourism destinations for the LGBTQ+ community.
The award ceremony took place at the lower Montjuïc Park station and was attended by TMB CEO Xavier Flores and the Director of Tourist Services and Transport, Montserrat Pérez. Representing Queer Destinations were its CEO, Edgar Weggelaar, and the organization’s Head for Europe, Adrià Hernández.
This recognition highlights TMB’s commitment to creating safe and accessible environments for everyone, regardless of their identity or orientation.
“Receiving this recognition at one of Barcelona’s most iconic leisure transport services is a clear sign of TMB’s efforts to integrate inclusion and diversity into all of its services,” said Xavier Flores. “We want to ensure that every person, whoever they are, can move around our city feeling respected and safe.”
The Queer Destinations Committed seal certifies that a company or institution has met a set of best practices in awareness and training to provide respectful, informed, and inclusive service to the LGBTQ+ community. In this case, 100% of the Montjuïc Cable Car staff have completed the Hospitality Meets Diversity program developed by Queer Destinations, which raises standards of quality and inclusion in the tourism sector.
Additionally, during the next two years—the validity period of the certification—the staff will continue to receive periodic training to strengthen their commitment and keep their knowledge up to date. The cable car will display a plaque featuring the seal and will include tags with QR codes allowing visitors to access more information and provide feedback on their experience.
Collaboration with Queer Destinations has been key to achieving this milestone. Edgar Weggelaar, CEO of the organization, stated:
“Barcelona is a global benchmark in tourism, and having a symbol like the Montjuïc Cable Car commit to inclusion sends a clear signal of progress. We are proud to work with TMB on this journey and to show that diversity is a core value in the tourism experience.”
The Montjuïc Cable Car, one of Barcelona’s most recognizable leisure transport services, offers privileged views of the city and receives excellent ratings from users, with an average score of 9.3 out of 10.
