At Queer Destinations, we believe that travel should celebrate authenticity, freedom, and respect. Today, we proudly announce that Holbox is now the first destination in Quintana Roo to earn the Queer Destinations Committed certification.

This milestone reflects a shared effort between Queer Destinations and the Holbox Hotel Association. Together, we worked to position Holbox as a safe, welcoming, and inclusive destination for LGBTQ+ travelers worldwide.

“This certification is meant to attract more travelers from the community—couples, friends, and families. We want them to feel safe in a place as special as Holbox,” said Gastón Fournier, Global Director of Operations at Queer Destinations.

A Commitment Backed by Action

To achieve this recognition, Holbox completed our Hospitality Meets Diversity training program. This program equips tourism professionals with practical tools to serve LGBTQ+ travelers with empathy and cultural intelligence.

More than 500 people across the local tourism industry participated. These included hotel teams, restaurant staff, tour operators, and other service providers. As a result, Holbox now offers a more informed and inclusive travel experience.

“What Holbox did was train its value chain first. Over 500 people completed the course. Then we led a full destination consultancy. We mapped the offer, aligned the values, and delivered the certification today,” Fournier added.

Inclusive Tourism, Real Impact

Inclusive tourism is not just a value—it is also a driver of economic growth. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), LGBTQ+ tourism generates over $4.7 trillion USD globally each year. This represents close to 10% of international travel. Moreover, travelers from the LGBTQ+ community spend on average $300 USD per day.

For this reason, becoming Queer Destinations Committed is more than symbolic. It helps destinations like Holbox stand out and build long-term value.

A Destination That Leads by Example

By joining the Queer Destinations Committed global network, Holbox becomes part of a growing community. This includes cities, companies, and regions around the world that are building safe and inclusive experiences for LGBTQ+ people.

Holbox is now a reference for other destinations in Mexico and Latin America. It shows what is possible when a community invests in visibility, respect, and safety for all.

We congratulate Holbox on this achievement. And we remain committed to shaping a future where everyone can experience the world as they are.

🌈 Experience the world as you are.
