The Timurid dynasty, which founded this empire, had Turkish origins even though it came from Mongolia. During two centuries of Moghul rule, numerous palaces and cenotaphs were built, the most famous being the Taj Mahal.
The Moghul rulers loved to surround their residences with vast gardens, often created in honor of their wives. These gardens are found throughout India, but in the Kashmir region, especially in Srinagar, stand some of the most beautiful examples, now on the list to become UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Ladakh is a region famous for its Buddhist monasteries.
