Nanomedicine and its application in the treatment of tuberculosis

Host:N. Chigorimbo-Tsikiwa

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from an infectious disease. Each year about 1.2 million people die from TB worldwide. While antibiotics exist, challenges faced by the treatment regimens, including drug absorption challenges, lengthy treatment durations and associated adherence challenges, and toxicity, are barriers to successful treatment of this disease. In addition, increasing resistance of M.tuberculosis limits the effectiveness of the antibiotics. To achieve effective treatment, there is need for application of innovative approaches to develop new treatment modalities. This talk will give an overview of what nanomedicines are, and our work to apply this technology towards the treatment of tuberculosis.
