THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS IN THE ALFA PROJECT

OnOctober 1, 2025

For the past three years, Sustainable Innovations has played a leading role in the ALFA project. The project worked to foster the wider adoption of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) and increase the biogas implementation as a reliable baseload energy source. In doing so, ALFA helped to reduce emissions from untreated livestock waste while generating new economic opportunities within the agricultural and bioeconomy sectors.

ALFA has been strategically implemented in six European countries—Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, and Spain—selected as case studies to demonstrate the viability and scalability of biogas. The project has provided science-based insights into biogas potential to inform policymakers and stakeholders across these regions. In parallel, more than 50 livestock farmers have received tailored technical, financial, and business support, as well as dedicated capacity-building opportunities to facilitate biogas deployment at scale.

Sustainable Innovations has served as Hub Manager for the Spanish region, coordinating stakeholder engagement and community-building activities. Based on the analysis of successful real-life examples of biogas uptake, we have supported farmers and sector stakeholders through business and financial mentoring, while also designing and executing training and awareness-raising campaigns.

Among our contributions to the project, we co-organised a high-level seminar during the SEPOR Agricultural Trade Fair, which brought together key industry voices to discuss biogas and circular economy synergies. In addition, we hosted a Mutual Learning Workshop in Lleida, aimed at encouraging knowledge exchange between researchers, farmers, and policymakers. As part of our capacity-building responsibilities, we also organised over five webinars, promoting technical learning and cross-sector collaboration to accelerate the adoption of biogas in Spain and beyond.
