Sustainability has been at the heart of Fjorda since day one – not an afterthought, but a founding principle. The Norwegian, women-led company has achieved Friend of the Sea® certification, confirming that its omega-3 products are sourced from traceable, responsibly managed fisheries that protect marine life and support coastal communities worldwide.
With extensive experience in the omega-3 industry, Fjorda’s founders understand how vital independent certifications are in driving genuine impact. For them, choosing Friend of the Sea® was not merely natural – it was essential. The certification reflects their values, responsibility, and determination to set a higher standard for the industry.
“The future of marine health depends on corporate integrity,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea®. “Fjorda AS has shown full commitment to our rigorous criteria for sustainable fishing, social accountability, and carbon reduction. Their certification provides consumers with a credible choice that supports the global effort to protect our oceans.”
Certified Sustainability and Full Traceability
To secure Friend of the Sea® certification, Fjorda met stringent requirements aligned with the FAO Guidelines for the Eco-Labelling of Fish and Fishery Products.
Its supply chain guarantees that fish oil originates only from well-managed, non-overexploited fish stocks. The fisheries used are highly selective, generating a maximum of 8% bycatch or discards, and must not capture any species listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.
Fjorda also complies with two additional Friend of the Sea® principles: Social Accountability across the entire supply chain and a commitment to annual carbon footprint reduction targets. This ensures that environmental integrity and ethical sourcing go hand in hand.
The result: high-purity omega-3 supplements such as Fjorda Heart, Fjorda Brain, and Fjorda Super, all derived from a transparent and sustainable source.
A Broader Commitment to People and Planet
Fjorda’s sustainability ambitions reach well beyond its products. The company is a proud member of the UN Global Compact, aligning its operations with principles covering human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption.
Fjorda’s supply partners are carefully chosen for their own sustainability credentials – from recyclable aluminium bottles to Eco-Lighthouse certified labels and carton packaging. Many partners also report according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
“We are proud to stand as role models – not only for women entrepreneurs, but also for other companies in our field,” said Beate Opstad Thy, Co-founder of Fjorda AS. “The omega-3 industry still has room for improvement. Real change begins with accountability and a shared commitment to progress. At Fjorda, we are proving that business can thrive while protecting our planet.”
Innovating for the Future
Looking ahead, Fjorda is exploring next-generation packaging solutions, such as compostable bottles and labels designed to help eliminate microplastics. This work reflects the company’s ongoing mission to consider both quality and responsibility at every stage of creating what they believe is the best fish oil in the world.
