Open Standards Approach Addresses Growing Security and Interoperability Challenges as AI-Driven VPPs Scale

Intertrust and Eurotech, a global leader in edge computing and IoT solutions, today announced that Eurotech has joined the Intertrust XPN Partner Program to integrate XPN’s security framework into Eurotech’s ReliaGATE edge gateway product line. The collaboration addresses critical security and interoperability challenges in the rapidly expanding virtual power plant (VPP) and distributed energy resources (DER) market.

Key highlights of the partnership:

  • Container-based XPN implementation on Eurotech’s ReliaGATE 15A-12 gateway enables rapid deployment
  • Addresses critical security gaps as utilities modernize energy infrastructure
  • Combined capabilities deliver enterprise-grade security through integrated edge computing and trusted data interoperability

As energy systems become increasingly decentralized and intelligent, utilities and energy providers see an increased opportunity to capitalize on AI and edge computing. Yet they also face mounting challenges in securing the growing number of edge devices—from solar inverters and battery systems to EV chargers and smart thermostats. Virtual power plants managing thousands of distributed assets, often with AI, demand trusted data interoperability and robust security.

“Eurotech recognized early that security cannot be an afterthought in edge computing—it must be foundational,” said Robert Andres, Head of Partner Ecosystem at Eurotech. “In partnership with Intertrust XPN, we see enormous opportunity to provide utilities and energy companies with secure, interoperable solutions that can scale to meet the demands of AI-driven energy management.”

strategic technology partnership

Unlike competitors who treat security as a separate layer, Eurotech has built its brand around integrated security solutions—making them an ideal partner for XPN. Eurotech’s strong commitment to open source development, particularly through the Eclipse Foundation, aligns naturally with the Trusted Energy Interoperability Alliance (TEIA), which develops open standards for secure, interoperable energy systems to minimize vendor lock-in. The partnership opens opportunities to engage with TEIA and Intertrust’s broader investor and community networks in the energy sector.

meeting virtual power plant security challenges

Virtual power plants aggregate distributed energy assets to function as a single power plant, but each connected device represents a potential entry point for cyberattacks that could destabilize the grid. XPN’s framework, implemented through Eurotech’s ReliaGATE gateways, provides zero-trust architecture with explicit trust verification, end-to-end encryption, tamper-resistant secure boot, and scalable key management for millions of devices—addressing critical gaps in current solutions that cannot scale or adapt to modern energy systems.

The solution targets utility-scale VPP deployments, industrial microgrids, commercial buildings, and residential solar systems, creating revenue opportunities through integration services, AWS Marketplace bundling, and managed security contracts.

deploying the combined solution

The collaboration combines Eurotech’s edge computing products and services with Intertrust XPN’s trusted data interoperability and scaled key management. Eurotech brings industrial-grade edge gateways that are designed to meet and exceed security requirements like IEC 62443-4-1/2, device lifecycle management, custom integration services, and AWS Marketplace access, while Intertrust contributes application-layer security expertise and TEIA-certified connections.

The partnership will begin with a containerized implementation of XPN on Eurotech’s ReliaGATE 15A-12 edge gateway, allowing for rapid deployment and validation, with plans to extend XPN support across Eurotech’s broader gateway portfolio.
