Dr. Lawrence Banks recently led a high-level mission to China, reaffirming the Organisation’s long-standing partnership with one of its Member States, which has been part of ICGEB since 1992

The delegation, comprising representatives from ICGEB Headquarters in Trieste, Italy, together with Executive Directors and researchers from the China National Center for Biotechnology Development (CNCBD), Beijing, China Medical City (CMC), and the ICGEB Regional Research Centre at Taizhou Medical City, undertook a series of institutional visits aimed at strengthening scientific collaboration and exploring new opportunities for joint initiatives.
The delegation visited Fudan University, one of China’s leading research universities, where discussions focused on advancing collaboration in biotechnology and biomedical research, promoting scientific excellence, and expanding opportunities for researcher exchange and innovation. Dr. Banks met with Prof. Mei Tian, who specialises in nuclear medicine, radiology, and molecular imaging-based precision medicine.
The mission also included a visit to the Shanghai Academy of International Standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine, providing an opportunity to exchange expertise and discuss areas of mutual interest in research, standards development, and international cooperation.
The visit further reinforced ICGEB’s strategic partnership with China and highlighted the Organisation’s commitment to fostering international scientific cooperation through collaborative research, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
As global challenges increasingly require coordinated scientific responses, ICGEB continues to work with its Member States and international partners to advance biotechnology for sustainable development, improved health, food security, and innovation, ensuring that scientific excellence delivers tangible benefits for communities worldwide.
