Delegates at the 6th Session of the Working Group on the Strengthening of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) affirmed ICGEB’s role in promoting the safe, responsible, and peaceful use of biotechnology.

Dr. Alessandro Marcello, Head of the Molecular Virology Group at ICGEB Trieste, and Dr. Marianna Ulinici, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Lab, attended the Working Group on the Strengthening of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) held from 11 to 22 August at the United Nations in Geneva.

ICGEB remains committed to advancing the Convention’s goals by contributing to the International Cooperation and Assistance (ICA) mechanism with training and capacity-building programmes. In addition, ICGEB works with the BWC-ISU United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) on coming editions of the course on “Pathogen Detection and Biosecurity” – to be announced soon.

Bilateral exchanges with delegations, international organisations, and partners, further underscore ICGEB’s role as a trusted partner in delivering practical tools, expertise, and cooperation opportunities to support global biosecurity. These include the BWC Implementation Support Unit, the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the Global Health Security Fund and BioPrevail.

Future actions by the ICGEB include participating in the BWC National Implementation Workshops to be held in Moldova (3–4 September 2025) and Uzbekistan (23–24 September 2025), to continue to promote the safe, responsible, and peaceful use of biotechnology worldwide.
