A NEW VIEW OF THE CAT’S EYE NEBULA WITH EUCLID

7 March 2026 News

A spectacular new view of the Cat’s Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) shows how powerful today’s space telescopes have become.
The image combines observations from the Hubble Space Telescope with data from
#Euclid, the European mission of the European Space Agency designed to map the geometry of the Universe and study its accelerated expansion.
While Hubble reveals the detailed inner structure of the nebula, expanding shells of gas and intricate filaments, Euclid places it in a much wider cosmic context, capturing thousands of distant galaxies in the background.

Behind this mission is also the work of European industry.
OHB Italia S.p.A. contributed key elements to Euclid’s scientific instrument. The company developed the advanced payload electronics — the “brain” of the instrument — and built the grism wheel of the NISP spectrometer, a mechanism that enables precise wavelength selection and allows scientists to analyse the light coming from distant galaxies.
These capabilities help Euclid measure how galaxies are distributed across the Universe and how cosmic structures have evolved over billions of years, crucial data to better understand dark matter and dark energy.
Euclid operates 1.5 million km from Earth at the Sun–Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2), the same region of space where the James Webb Space Telescope is located.
With missions like Euclid, Europe is opening a new window on the Universe and
OHB Italia S.p.A. is proud to contribute to the technologies that make these discoveries possible.
