Humanising Science: Using Stories, People and Purpose to Strengthen Public Engagement in Science

Abstract
Scientific discoveries have the power to transform lives, yet the way science is communicated often fails to connect with the people it is intended to benefit. In an era of information overload, misinformation, and growing public scepticism towards experts, effective science communication requires more than simply presenting data, evidence and facts. This seminar explores the importance of humanising scientific discovery through storytelling, personal narratives, and authentic engagement. Drawing on examples from biomedical research, disease awareness campaigns, public education initiatives, and digital science communication, Dr Emma Yhnell will examine how researchers can make complex scientific concepts more accessible, relatable, and meaningful to diverse audiences.
Her talk will discuss how human-centred approaches can improve public understanding of science, increase awareness of diseases and strengthen trust in scientific institutions. Participants will gain practical insights into
communicating research with empathy, clarity, and impact, ultimately helping to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and societal benefit.
