The match everyone had been waiting for at the Reial Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 took place on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Carlos Alcaraz, champion of the tournament in 2022 and 2023, and Holger Rune, the sixth seed, faced off in the final of the 72nd edition of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

Despite an early break by the Spaniard that suggested another smooth afternoon, the Dane showed why he had reached the final, quickly recovering the break and even having two set points. The first set went to a tiebreak, where Rune, on his fifth set point, took the lead.

The second set was expected to be just as close as the first, but misfortune struck in the form of an injury for Alcaraz, who called for the physio at the beginning of the set. The player from Murcia continued playing, backed by a crowd that never stopped chanting his name, but he could do little against a brilliant Rune, who arrived in Barcelona determined to make a statement — and he did, winning the final 7-6(8), 6-2 and claiming his first ATP 500 title.

With this victory, Holger Rune becomes the new champion of the 72nd edition of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell–Trofeo Conde de Godó.
