One in five members of the LGBTI community in the EU experience homelessness, rising to one in three for trans people and nearly 40% for intersex people. Lack of institutional support, social rejection and identity-related family conflict are amongst the causes for this.
Access to housing is a precondition for access to healthcare, employment, education and social services. Yet LGBTI homelessness remains hidden in Europe. Often, we lack the data and research needed to fully understand the prevalence and forms of LGBTI homelessness and demand meaningful political changes in different local contexts across Europe. With the rising of the far-right, deepening socio-economic inequalities, and escalation of anti-trans, anti-democratic, anti-gender and anti-migrant attacks, the situation around homelessness of LGBTI communities in Europe is exacerbated, especially for those living on intersections.
At this online event, five LGBTI groups who will present robust research on LGBTI homelessness carried out in their local contexts: QUORE in Italy; Black Sex Worker Collective in Germany; Ljubljana Pride in Slovenia, and Ahora Donde and Acathi i collaboratively in Barcelona, Spain.
The groups will share the powerful stories data tells us and talk through policy changes that need to be happen. Join us to understand the realities behind the numbers.
