Dr. Nikolay Vasilyevich Gnuchev, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, was associated with the ICGEB from the early 1990s.

On June 4, 2025 at the age of 91, Dr. Gnuchev, described by his peers as “an outstanding scientist and a man who devoted his life to science” passed away in his native Russia.

He is remembered as one of the first-generation representatives of the V.A. Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology (EIMB), Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Department of Biological Sciences, dedicated to fundamental and applied research in gene expression regulation, spatial genome organisation, and epigenetics. Dr. Gnuchev served as Deputy Director for Science for over 20 years at the Institute of Gene Biology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which was also established as an ICGEB Affiliated Centre.

Alternate Governor to the ICGEB Board from the early 1990s, Dr. Gnuchev served together with Academician G.P. Georgiev (a member of the ICGEB Council of Scientific Advisers from 1995 to 2003), and belonged to the generation that created genetic engineering.

His participation in expert commissions and international organizations, including the UN, UNIDO, and UNESCO, testifies to his expertise and importance to the scientific community as well as concrete actions in championing molecular biology and biotechnology.

The ICGEB expresses sympathy to Nikolai Vasilyevich’s relatives and friends at this time, and remembers with warmth his ready smile and attention to his colleagues.
