The WTA 125 Open Internacional de San Sebastian, organized by Tennium, started with a huge celebration of tennis and packed stands all weekend. Donostia’s public came out in full force to witness a tournament that’s becoming an essential event on the city’s sports calendar.

The WTA 125 Open Internacional de San Sebastián, the first tournament of its kind held in the Basque Country, got off to a flying start, filling the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastian with excitement and energy. The event, organized by Tennium, began with the traditional Tennis Festival, which served as the official inauguration last Friday, bringing together various institutional and sports figures, including San Sebastián’s mayor, Eneko Goia, and local player Ane Mintegi.

The anticipation from fans was immediate. The qualifying rounds on Saturday and Sunday drew a massive crowd that filled the club’s stands. The atmosphere was nothing short of spectacular, with local fans enthusiastically cheering on the players.

Nerea Berecoechea, a player with local roots, became a highlight by earning her spot in the Main Draw with a hard-fought victory that was celebrated by the home crowd.

Beyond the on-court action, Sunday was a special day with the Basque Country Clinic, an activity that brought together children from the region with professional players like Ane Mintegi and Leyre Romero, as well as the tournament director, Anabel Medina.

With the qualifying rounds complete, the most intense action will begin this Monday, September 8, with the start of the Main Draw. The tournament, which awards $115,000 in prize money, will run until September 13, promising a week of top-level tennis in the city.
