Following its launch in June 2024, Human Technopole’s five National Facilities continue to attract significant interest from Italy’s life sciences community. The latest call 25-ROUND-1, received 169 proposals , a notable increase from the over 120 submitted in the 24-PILOT call. Of submissions, 82 projects were granted access to HT’s facilities.
Facilities’ breakdown in detail of the projects received:
- Genomics: 99 submitted, 33 granted
- Genome Engineering & Disease Modelling: 8 submitted, 3 granted
- Data Handling & Analysis: 13 submitted, 12 granted
- Structural Biology: 39 submitted, 25 granted
- Light Imaging: 10 submitted, 9 granted
Notably, 32% of all proposals came from Junior Principal Investigators, and 34% of the approved projects will be led by Junior PIs, underlining the role of the Facilities in supporting the next generation of researchers.
Geographically, the 25-ROUND-1 call shows that 77% of applications came from institutions in the North of Italy, with 14% from the Centre and 9% from the South. When looking at the success rate (approved/submitted), access was comparable across regions: 48% in the North and Centre, 56% in the South. The growth in applications between 2024 and 2025 was higher in the North (+28) and Centre (+10), compared to the South (+7), reflecting a general increase in engagement across all regions.
Upcoming calls:
The 25-ROUND-2 call is currently open for applications from researchers affiliated with universities, IRCCS, and public research institutions in Italy until 30 September 2025.
The next call, 25-ROUND-3, will launch on 1 October 2025. Applications must be submitted through the PICA platform by researchers.
Since their launch, the National Facilities of Human Technopole have provided open and subsidised access to cutting-edge technologies in genomics, genome engineering, structural biology, light imaging, and data analysis. This supports both established and emerging scientists to turn their ideas into significant discoveries.
All applications are evaluated by the independent Standing Independent Evaluation Committee, ensuring fair and merit-based access.
Through these opportunities, Human Technopole remains committed to fostering scientific excellence, training, and technological development.
