Key Checkpoints in EU Projects
In Horizon Europe projects, a milestone is a significant checkpoint that marks the completion of a critical phase, task, or deliverable. Unlike deliverables, which are tangible outputs such as reports, prototypes, or datasets, milestones act as markers of progress, allowing consortium partners and the European Commission to assess whether the project is on track.
Each milestone is linked to a specific Work Package or task and is assigned a due date. It may be associated with a deliverable, decision point, or critical review. For example, completing a prototype design in month six or obtaining ethics approval by month twelve would be considered project milestones. Milestones are used both for internal project management and to demonstrate progress to funders.
