Los territorios rurales hoy en día son la frontera de la transformación. Como señala Rem Koolhaas, «el pueblo está cambiando mucho más rápido que la ciudad más avanzada». Y pese a que a nivel narrativo se ha puesto el foco en la aglomeración de personas en las grandes ciudades para el año 2050, en las zonas rurales se vive también una transformación proporcionalmente mucho más intensa que en las ciudades, al experimentar de forma simultánea, tanto saltos de digitalización en sectores primarios como migraciones estacionales, transformaciones del uso del suelo, subsidios cambiantes y nuevas conformaciones sociales y territoriales.
Desde la pandemia, y sumado a muchas situaciones que se viven en las grandes ciudades -como los efectos del cambio climático, el alto valor de adquisición de vivienda, el costo tan alto de vida y las dificultades para mantener una calidad de vida- algunas familias se han empezado a plantear el poder migrar, es decir, irse de la ciudad y vivir en «el pueblo», «el campo» o «la naturaleza», sin saber exactamente qué tipo de espacio es el que están imaginando y muchas veces tampoco lo que conllevaría tal cambio. Con esto vamos a intentar desarrollar la dificultad que tiene esta narrativa y que puede dificultar el movimiento orgánico de personas de las ciudades a otros puntos del mapa: la falta de definición de esos espacios que nos estamos imaginando.
Pero, ¿qué es una zona rural? Las zonas rurales siguen en descenso, pero lo más importante es que siguen sin definirse. Textualmente, los términos medio rural, paisaje rural, zona rural y otros más aluden a conceptos que identifican al espacio geográfico del campo, visto o calificado como opuesto a lo urbano (lo relativo al pueblo por oposición a la ciudad). Aunque el concepto de lo rural se aplica, en distintas escalas, al territorio de una región o de una localidad cuyos usos económicos son las actividades
