Science for Africa, by Africa: Advancing Homegrown Innovation for a Resilient Continent

Host: L. Donaldson

Abstract

As Africa marks another Africa Day, the continent stands at a critical crossroads of opportunity and urgency. The Science for Africa Foundation (SFA) is at the forefront of shaping a new era of African-led science that addresses local challenges through global standards. From pandemic preparedness to climate resilience, from precision medicine to data governance, SFA

supports a diverse and inclusive ecosystem of research and innovation that centres African expertise, institutions, and priorities.

Guided by its Five Ps framework—People, Products, Policies, Processes, and Places—SFA is building resilient scientific ecosystems that deliver equitable impact. People are empowered through leadership development and training; Products emerge from bold, interdisciplinary research; Policies are informed through evidence-based advocacy; Processes are strengthened via systems innovation and good grant practices; and Places—from universities to public health institutes—are transformed into engines of

regional development. This presentation will spotlight SFA’s evolving strategy to build sustainable science systems rooted in equity, excellence, and impact. It will showcase flagship initiatives—such as DELTAS Africa, Grand Challenges Africa, Open

Research Africa (ORA), and the Cross-Pharma Capacity Development Initiative (CPCDI)—that exemplify a bold vision: enabling Africa to be not just a beneficiary but a driver of global knowledge. In the face of geopolitical shifts and funding transitions, SFA offers a powerful response—one that champions subsidiarity, co-creation, and structural transformation for a science-empowered Africa.
