This year I had the privilege of participating, along with my colleague Davinia Espino, as a mentor in the tenth edition of Canarias Masterclass, a Canary Talent initiative that connects students in the 2nd year of Bachillerato with professionals from different sectors to help them make more informed decisions about their professional future.

Our first day was with María Cabrera Corujo, a student with a keen interest in Business Administration, Marketing and Finance, and a clear international vocation. After an initial presentation in which we met María and shared experiences with other mentors and institutional representatives, we organised her immersion day at Astican.

During the visit, María was able to get to know different areas of the company. She started in the financial department with Davinia, who explained in detail her functions and the day-to-day work in this area. She continued with me in the sales and marketing department, where I showed her the sales strategy, customer management and how we communicate what we do. In addition, as he showed interest in the Human Resources area, we organised a meeting with the HR team, who shared with him the value of the human factor in a company like ours.
It was an intense, close and very enriching day, both for her and for us. We shared not only knowledge and experiences, but also conversations, concerns, curiosities and, above all, enthusiasm.
We ended the day with a tour of the shipyard and a lunch, where Maria had the opportunity to interact with more professionals and experience the industrial environment up close.

As part of the same programme, we also had the opportunity to welcome another student from Tenerife, Javier González Grande, with a strong interest in mechanical engineering, to Astican. Although his mentor, our colleague Pedro Artiles, ship manager, was unable to attend the initial event in Tenerife, the two of them had a first close contact via video call. Afterwards, we organised his visit to the shipyard, where he was able to get to know our facilities first hand, talk to part of the technical team and learn about the industrial processes that form part of our day-to-day activity. Given the complexity of a shipyard, the visit left us wanting more, though it was filled with enthusiasm, and we hope to have offered a realistic and valuable perspective on the world of engineering

We are deeply grateful to Canary Talent and Canarias Masterclass for promoting this type of initiative that connects young talent with the professional world.

Thank you, María and Javier, for your energy, curiosity and enthusiasm. It has been a real pleasure to open the doors of ASTICAN so that you could explore, learn and move forward in this path of important decisions.
We wish you all the best in your professional future!
