26-27 September 2025: Come and meet ICGEB scientists who will be at multiple events during the Trieste Next Festival and European Researchers’ Night.

This September, ICGEB renews its participation in the Trieste Next Festival of Scientific Research and the European Researchers’ Night, offering the public a variety of opportunities for engagement.

Appointments:

Monday, 22 September – “Un’ora con il ricercatore” ICGEB researcher Dr. Francesca Paron will be running classes entitled “La cellula animale: una fortezza” in designated primary schools in Trieste. [event in Italian]

Trieste Next Science Festival

Friday, 26 September

📌 09:00–12:00: Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste, ICGEB Stand. School groups will be hosted, together with IRCCS Materno Infantile “Burlo Garofolo”, at the Gazebo in the main square of Trieste. ICGEB will be running the workshop entitled: “La scienza che illumina: un viaggio verso il futuro tra genetica e fluorescenza.”

The activity includes an interactive lesson led by IRCCS Materno Infantile “Burlo Garofolo” researchers on genetics and personalised medicine, and will show how genetic variants affect both disease and individual responses to medication. ICGEB will introduce students to fluorescent proteins, highlighting their key role in scientific and biomedical research. Using a fluorescence microscope, participants will observe fluorescent bacteria and explore the location of proteins within eukaryotic cells. [event in Italian]

📌 14:30–15:30: ICGEB Trieste. Students from European universities participating in the Trieste Next International Academy will be hosted for a personalised visit to the ICGEB’s laboratories and facilities in Trieste. [event in English]

European Researchers’ Night

📌 17:00-18:00: ICGEB Researcher Dr. Denise Khouri Chalouhi will hold a short conference presenting her work to the general public. “Anche i batteri parlano.” [event in Italian]

📌 18:00–22:00: Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste. ICGEB researchers will introduce three Interregional science projects underway in the EU to the public:

  • CEDRIC (Interreg Italy–Austria): improving soil to enhance plant growth.
  • PROMOS (Interreg Italy–Austria): reinforcing the biomedical ecosystem to accelerate the process of making scientific results available to the general public.
  • COHERENCE (Interreg Italy–Slovenia): developing a cell therapy for the treatment of non-healing wounds.

Saturday, 27 September

📌 21:00: Teatro Miela, Trieste. “Al confine tra pelle e cuore – le emozioni della scienza nella lotta contro il cancro” – a theatre production, presented by ICGEB for GO!2025 [event in Italian with live sign language interpretation]

📌 Saturday 27 September – Sunday 28 September (all day)

ICGEB Stand. Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste. The public will be invited to participate in hands-on activities involving fluorescence microscopy.

Through fluorescence microscopy, visitors will discover structures that are normally invisible under a standard optical microscope, such as bacteria, tissues, and cellular components.
