TURNING INDUSTRIAL CO₂ INTO VALUE: OUR JOURNEY WITH CATCO2NVERS

After four and a half years of collaborative research and innovation, the CATCO2NVERS project has come to a successful close. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, the project set out to transform industrial CO₂ emissions from bio-based industries into high-value chemical products through the integration of advanced catalytic technologies. Today, this ambition has materialised through the development and validation of five innovative conversion routes, each demonstrating the potential of circular carbon solutions in real industrial contexts.
The core objective of CATCO2NVERS has been to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by converting residual CO₂ into useful chemical compounds via electrochemical, enzymatic, and thermochemical processes. These efforts have resulted in the production of glyoxylic acid, lactic acid, methyl furan dicarboxylic ester, methyl esters of cyclic carbonated fatty acids, and bio-methanol compounds with broad applicability across the chemical, cosmetics, and plastics industries.
Sustainable Innovations has played a key role throughout the project, leading the development of exploitation and market analysis strategies to help bring the project’s Key Exploitable Results closer to commercial readiness. In parallel, our team has produced e-learning resources and training programmes designed to facilitate knowledge transfer to industry stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. In our role as communication and dissemination leader, we have implemented a comprehensive outreach strategy, maximising the visibility of the project and its outcomes at both European and international levels.
Through targeted stakeholder engagement, content creation, event participation, and the organisation of strategic workshops, Sustainable Innovations has helped position CATCO2NVERS as a reference initiative in the field of CO₂ valorisation. The project’s outcomes contribute to the EU’s long-term climate and circular economy goals, reinforcing the strategic role of innovation in the decarbonisation of industry.
